“Lagrimas de Amor” — the 2021 Dia de los Muertos exhibition at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center (MAC) — is now open for viewing until Nov. 14. The annual reception for the Dia de los Muertos exhibition will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the MAC, located at 645 W Main St. The free event welcomes residents of all ages.
The tradition has been celebrated through local artwork and community altars at the MAC since 1999. Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a colorful two-day holiday that is celebrated on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. The tradition honors and mourns the dead through visiting graves, gathering with family and friends, and creating ‘ofrendas,’ or ‘offerings’ on altars that pay respect to deceased loved ones.
The reception will feature personal altars and artwork from local artists including the larger than life ‘Loteria’ card, ‘El Niño.’ A second exhibition, ‘Tres Artistas,’ is also open for viewing on the second floor gallery. This exhibition features the work of local talent, Eddie Rodriguez, Goku Mcafee, and Rafael Barajas.
Both exhibitions are currently open for viewing during the galleries regular hours. The MAC is currently open Wednesday through Friday, from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. For any other information, you can visit the MACs website at www.artsmerced.org.
