City honors El Capitan Track Team champions

Merced city leaders on Monday honored the El Capitan Boys Track Team for winning this year’s San Joaquin Section Championships in Division III.

Led by Senior Brian Matthews, Sophomore Naseem Hassaan, Sophomore Devine Petershey and Freshman Maurice McGauley, El Cap surged to success in the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 4 x 100m relays. Several of the boys qualified for the upcoming Master’s Meet.

“These boys represent the city well,” said one of their coaches. “They are great athletes but there is something they do better. They are great students. Each and every one of them. … We started a program that recognizes students with 3.5 GPA and above. We specifically ordered nice, running shoes with golden spikes on them. If they earn 3.5 GPA or above, they get the golden shoes. And we had to buy everybody those golden shoes.”

One of the star athletes is senior Brian Matthews who is moving on to the West Point Academy.

The Varsity Girls also achieved success as CCC individual champions in the 100m & 400m, with girls qualifying for both the Section and Master’s Meet.

This season has been a testament to the hard work put in by the athletes and the work ethic of the coaches, including Coach Ybarra, Coach Stewart, Coach Moore, Coach Lisa, Coach Hassaan, and Coach Tisho.

Merced City Councilman Delray Shelton presented the team with certificates of recognition signed by the mayor.
