Volunteers with Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC), Souza’s Bucking Bulls and KAMB Radio were giving out coats and jackets for children in need on Nov. 5 at the Boys and Girls Club in Merced.
It was the second annual “Coats for Hope Drive,” also supported by Big O Tires, West America Bank, and Ameriprise Financial Services.
Love INC was able to obtain 665 jackets for local families. In addition to the jackets, those who made their way to the event were treated to a free meal and were given helpful information regarding future events as well as other community resources.
For those who do not know about the organization, Love INC is a nationwide movement that consists of over 150 affiliates across 30 states in addition to Nairobi, Kenya. The local branch, Love INC of Greater Merced, is made up of businesses, churches, and organizations from Merced, Atwater, Winton, Le Grand, Planada, Livingston, and Delhi. The organizations overarching mission statement is “… to mobilize local churches throughout Greater Merced to offer hope and restoration through resources and services to those in need. Together we work alongside individuals and families who desire to change the impact of poverty in their lives.”
The mission statement of the local chapter: “Giving people in need physical resources such as food, clothing, and furniture helps to resolve their immediate physical need.”
“Everyone can do something,” says event organizer Annette Macias, “and sometimes the need feels overwhelming, but we can help the person that’s in front of us. We can help one person at a time, and it will change the life of the person, and it will make an impact on the community. Merced means mercy, and when we can show mercy to our community it is a beautiful thing.”
