Youths aged 9 to 18 will shine in “Disney’s High School Musical Jr.”, to be performed on Aug. 9, 10 and 11 at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center in Merced.
The Aug. 9 and 10 performances of “High School Musical” will start at 7:30 p.m., and the Aug. 11 performance will start at 2:00 p.m.
The cost of tickets for adults is $10 and for children, $5.
The show’s directors are Abbie Roe and Madison Mitchell.
They have been involved in theater since high school.
Roe, who just completed Merced College, was the President of the Drama Club when she attended Merced High School, and Mitchell was the President of her school’s Drama Club when she attended El Capitan High.
Roe explained, “‘High School Musical’ was a popular kids movie made into a stage play. It’s about cliques in high school and fitting in by sticking to the status quo.
“The lead, Troy Bolton, is battling whether he wants to be in the high school musical or be on the basketball team. Another character, Gabriella Montez, is struggling with whether to be in the musical or be in the Science decathlon.”
“High School Musical” is being presented by Phoenix Creative Collective, a theater company in Merced whose Board members include Rob Hypes, Noelle Chandler, and Shawn Overton. The musical is being sponsored by Stone Ridge Christian School.
Phoenix Creative Collective recently presented three plays at the Multicultural Arts Center in June and July as part of PhoenixPhest – – “She Kills Monsters”, “Murder on the Orient Express”, an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic story, and “Mamma Mia!”, which was extended to August 2 – 3.
Referencing “High School Musical”, Roe said, “We’ve done three shows for adults, and this is the Kids Camp.”
