Cowboy / Vaquero Run brings out spirit of Merced

Hundreds of runners made their way to the intersection of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way last weekend to take part in the Merced County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Cowboy/Vaquero 5K Run.

Now in its third year, the family-friendly 5K run/walk event kicked off with a children’s half-mile race that brought together excited youngsters and their parents or loved ones.

To encourage the young runners, many of whom were experiencing a competitive race for the first time, their names and times were announced as they crossed the finish line, and then they were presented with shiny medals.

Older runners in the 5-K event found themselves on a creative course through the Downtown Merced area. This year’s top spot went to Erick Godoy, who came in just under 16 minutes by maintaining an average speed just over 11.5 miles per hour throughout the race.
