Vintage cars lined the street near the Main Police Headquarters in downtown Merced, all decorated and ready for children to come around to find goodies and treats last Saturday.
“Cops for Critters” is an event where all reaches of the community can come together and enjoy the Halloween Spirit. This event offers a safe and accessible option for trick or treating for the youth, an outlet for vintage car lovers, as well as fostering a sense of trust and familiarity between the police and the general public.
At the event were bounce houses, a variety of food vendors, incredible vintage vehicles, treats for the children, in addition to community voted on Car Show awards for attendees (The Chief’s award, People Choice, Best Decorated, Top Three and Best Specialty). Another amazing aspect of this event is that all of the proceeds will be donated to Applegate Zoo, to help with maintenance of the facilities and care of the animals.
“I’m new to the community so I wanted to build that relationship with the community as well as breaking any barriers that are between the community and law enforcement in general,” said Officer Rosa Alcaraz, an MPD community liaison and event organizer. “We want the children to see that they can come close to an officer, and ask any questions, or even for help. It’s good for them to see that we are human beings.”
