Merced Women’s Club poised for colorful Spring Fashion Show

The Merced Women’s Club will host its annual Spring Fashion Show on April 2, in its clubhouse at 707 W. 22nd Street, Merced.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds to replace the roof of the beautiful historical clubhouse.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon. Tickets are $10 each and include lunch, dessert, coffee and tea as well as the fashion show, which will be held during lunch.

Clothing and accessories are being provided by Christina’s Boutique, located in the Bear Creek Galleria at 2852 G. Street, Merced, and will include an array of the latest women’s Spring fashions.

Raffle tickets for prizes will also be sold at the door as part of the fundraising efforts. The event is open to members and their guests as well as to the public. However, reservations must be made by calling Ruth Dacus at (209) 723-1169 no later than Friday, March 29.

The Merced Women’s Club (Club) was organized in 1921 and incorporated in 1924 by the merging of the Tuesday Club (1906), Music Club (1913), and Drama Club (1915). Its clubhouse, a red brick Colonial, New England style structure, at the corner of W. 22nd and N streets, was opened to the public on April 7, 1926 after women in the community raised $10,000 to build the facility. The clubhouse, which was designated an historic building in 1990 by the City of Merced, is available for private rental at a reasonable rate. The main hall of the charming facility can accommodate up to 250 attendees and is often rented for weddings, parties and other events. Those interested in renting the clubhouse should contact the Club at (209) 383-2234.

The Merced Women’s Club, which provides social and cultural experiences for members and their guests, also has program objectives that pursue educational, civic and philanthropic interests. The Club provides an annual scholarship for a local lady attending Merced College and also donates to a number of worthy causes. Membership is available to the people of Merced and the surrounding area based on sponsorship by a member of the Club and approval by its Board. Luncheon meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from September to June, inclusive.  Luncheon reservations are required.

Current Officers of the Merced Women’s Club include Mary Lennon, President; Vicki Wajdak, 1st Vice President; Ellen Taylor, 2nd Vice President; Gladys Winters, Recording Secretary; Margaret Warmack, Corresponding Secretary; Shirley Makinson, Treasurer; Lynda Sykes, Immediate Past President; and four elected Advisors including Ruth Dacus, Sharon Doggett, Peggy McKelvey, and Sylvia Poupard.
