Merced Cops Check Their Lists, Give Back To Students In Need
Every year in December, the Merced Police Department asks local schools to provide them with a list of deserving students who may be facing challenges in their lives.
They take this list, and they pair each child with an officer. Then they all get together and spend a wonderful day of Christmas shopping, courtesy of the Merced Mall.
It’s called ‘Shop With A Cop.’
This year, however, the kids had to stay home because of the pandemic. But that didn’t stop the men and women in blue who always come through for the local community. The officers showed up in force at the Mall one recent morning. They were armed with Christmas Wish lists from the children. It was time to do some serious holiday shopping.
A total of 15 kids — 11 boys and four girls — will have a more Merry Christmas because of the effort. A few of the children are currently experiencing homelessness. With generous donations from the community — including the Merced Mall — the cops were able to spend $200 per child.
Also this month, the Merced Mall partnered with the Merced City Fire Department and the Police Department in collecting toys for their Fire and Kops for Kids Toy Drive. Local residents joined in the effort. They brought unwrapped toys to the Mall and they were placed in the Mall’s holiday Choo-Choo Train. The toys were then collected and distributed to local children in our community.
