Football season begins at local high schools

High school football fans, students and family members of athletes filled up the stadium stands last weekend as the first games on the gridiron got underway in Merced.

The Golden Valley Cougars took on Del Campo at Veterans Stadium and the matchup ended up being a hotly contested one. In the end, the Cougars had the edge, beating Del Campo 28-20.

At Don Odishoo Stadium, the El Capitan Gauchos took on Delhi for a hard fought game. At the end of the fourth quarter, it was Delhi who would walk away with the win, with a final score of 48-32. “We fell down early, but we picked ourselves up and showed a lot of fight and a lot of heart. We let the game get away from us in the end, but we learned a lot about ourselves and what varsity football is really all about,” said El Capitan Head Coach Anthony Martinez.  “As long as we keep learning from our losses, one day they won’t be losses anymore. We just have to keep working hard.”

Outside of Merced, Central Catholic hosted the Merced High Bears in Modesto. The Bear’s away game would result in a win for Central Catholic with a final score of 41-19.
