Santa holds workshop at Applegate Park Zoo
By RYAN WANG
The City of Merced’s Parks and Community Services department held their annual Santa’s workshop at Applegate Park Zoo last Friday, Dec. 16. Families flocked to the zoo to enjoy an evening of pajamas, hot cocoa, Christmas crafts, and a chance to meet Santa.
There were multiple craft stations for children to choose from, including making stockings, ornaments, candy canes, and a station to write a letter to Santa. Holiday cheer was in the air.
Everything seemed to be going to plan until the Grinch made his arrival. A Parks and Community Service worker dressed in a green life-like furry suit paired with a rubbery still-faced Grinch mask terrified the younger kids.
Children looked on with suspicion as the Grinch made his way through the event. One brave girl was not fazed and showed the Grinch some much-needed Christmas spirit. She paused to take a picture with him, smiling as she stood unafraid. The suspicion was lifted by her brave act, and the smaller children were no longer terrified of the green beast.
Later in the evening, Santa made his appearance. Parents stood by and took pictures as children lined up to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him their Christmas lists.
If you missed out on this event, there is no need to worry. Merced’s Parks and Community Services department puts on affordable family centered events for the community throughout the year.
