At Merced College, “spring” means graduation, but it also means “music”. With several musical ensembles bringing their semester’s rehearsals to a close with semester-end concerts, Merced audiences are in for musical delights.
This Friday, May 4, the Merced College Chorale presents the results of their weekly rehearsals. The concert, presented in the Merced College Theater, brings a wide range of musical styles together in a choral setting.
“It’s always a joy to bring a concert to the Merced College stage with so many different musical variants,” says conductor Curtis Nelson. “Those attending will hear everything from the classic Jerome Kern song “The Way You Look Tonight,” the spiritual “I Want to Be Ready,” a Beatles song, an African chant, an ’80s movie theme song, and songs by Dr. Seuss and Dolly Parton. Perhaps never before such a broad representation of choral music on one Merced stage.”
Add to these selections from classical music and the current movie musical “The Greatest Showman” and you have a concert where every musical taste will have something to satisfy.
The Merced College Chorale is conducted by Nelson, who is finishing his 21st year bringing choral concerts to the Merced College stage and accompanied by Philip Smallwood, who also conducts the Merced College Community Chorus, who will be presenting their concert May 11 and 12.
The Merced College Chorale Fall Concert will be presented Friday, May 4 at 8 p.m. in the Merced College Theater. Tickets are available in advance at Gottschalk’s Music in Merced, at the Merced College Bookstore, and at the Theater Box Office one hour before the concert.
