Upcoming workshop: ‘Veggie gardening made easy’

Spring is upon us — that means it’s time for spring vegetable gardening!

Spinach, kale, lettuces, broccoli, radishes, peas—these are just a few of the veggies that thrive in Merced County this time of year.

Some can be ready to eat in only 30-45 days!

It’s also time to start seeds for summer crops. Tomatoes, squash and cucumbers — Start the seeds indoors now and they’ll be ready to transplant in six to eight weeks when the nights are above 55F.

The Merced County Master Gardeners will offer a Seed Starting and Vegetable Gardening Workshop on Saturday, March 9, 10 a.m. to about Noon. It’s free (donations to cover material costs are welcome.) They will cover techniques, discuss ‘tips and tricks’ of starting vegetables from seeds, offer detailed information about spring vegetable gardening and explain the finer points of transplanting. Attendees will practice transplanting skills using spring seedlings then take them home to grow and enjoy!

Master Gardeners are volunteers trained and certified through a statewide program under the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The Master Gardener Program is a public service effort to extend UC research-based information about home horticulture and pest management to the public.

Here in Merced County there are about 40 Master Gardeners ready to help the public with a wide variety of garden related topics. In addition to information offered during the March 9 seminar, Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions and help with yard, garden and tree concerns.

The seminar will be held in the Merced County Cooperative Extension Office classroom, 2145 Wardrobe Ave, Merced, CA 95341. Space is limited; reservations are recommended!
