Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center has summer fun for all ages

The Carnegie Arts Center’s calendar has summer fun for all ages. From art classes to exhibitions and family activities to gallery talks, the CAC has something for everyone!

Kicking off the summer is the CAC’s annual youth art exhibition, Ready, Set, Show! now on view through June 23. Youth in grades K-12 (ages 5-18) from communities throughout the region are sharing their artwork with the public in the CAC’s Ferrari Gallery. This year, 230 works in a variety of media are on display, including the entries for the 2022 “My California” Downtown Banner Contest.

“It’s always so exciting and refreshing to show works by school-age artists,” says CAC Director Lisa McDermott. “Getting to see such creative work from some of the most talented youth artists in the valley is what makes this exhibition a CAC visitor favorite.”

A closing reception for the exhibit will take place on June 23 from 7 p.m. to 8 pm., as part of the monthly Family Friday series.

Following “Ready, Set, Show,” will be another returning favorite — the Carnegie Art Showcase. On view July 5 through Sept. 2, this annual juried exhibition is the finest showcase in the Central Valley for new work by California artists in a variety of media. Gallery Talks with CAS award winners will take place during the run of the exhibition, one on Thursday, July 27; and another on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Summer Art Camps are back! The CAS is offering weeklong art and creative writing camps for ages 7 and up, starting June 12. Camps range in theme from commics to printmaking, art around the world to collage, and short stories to fairytales.

New to the CAC’s summer class offerings are Summer Workshops for adults, these one-off workshops focus on a different medium or subject and are beginner friendly. The schedule includes Flower Painting with Watercolor on June 9, Watercolor Landscapes on June 23, Portraits in Charcoal on July 7, and Portraits in Chalk Pastels on July 21.

“The CAC is a true gathering place for the sharing of ideas and experiences. With a strong emphasis on families and youth, our programs and classes have continued to grow, but we know that lots of people are still just discovering us. We are excited to offer a free creative event for the whole community, showcasing who we are, and what we do. We hope everyone will come out for an hour or two to explore the Arts Center and have fun.”

The Block Party will take place inside, outside, and all around the CAC at 250 N. Broadway in downtown Turlock. Admission is free. Sponsored by Gemperle Family Farms and the City of Turlock Community Events Fund.

The CAC’s ongoing monthly programs including Art Chat Happy Hour, Family Friday, and Saturday Studio, will continue throughout the summer.
