Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and his entourage swept through this valley region last weekend, visiting leaders, supporters and Portuguese American residents in the Atwater-Livingston area and the city of Gustine.
At the homestead of Manuel Vierra of AV Thomas Produce, President Rebelo de Sousa met with members of the Merced County Board of Supervisors, including Chairman Lloyd Pareira and board members Scott Silveira and Jose Pedrozo. Rebelo de Sousa was presented with a county proclamation in honor of his visit to the local are.
On Sunday, the president received a warm welcome to Gustine, meeting with city leaders and members of the Portuguese American community. The president presented a merit medal to local dairy farmer Joao Pires, a native of the Azores.
Rebelo de Sousa was also scheduled to attend a San Francisco Giants game in celebration of Portuguese Heritage Night, and a panel discussion on sustainable energy solutions at Stanford University.
