Mount Olive celebrates 100 years of Black history

Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Atwater marked a milestone celebration, honoring 100 years of Black history with a special program on Feb. 22.

Dr. John DeGraft Johnson MD, (Thoracic Surgery Specialist), Key Note Speaker Alexandria Johnson, and Antoine Hubbard Sr., the CEO of S.O.U.L.

According to Rev. Dr. Felix Hayden-Jenkins, pastor of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, the program was both spiritually rich and deeply meaningful.

“To God be the glory for a blessed and meaningful Black History Program,” he said.

Dr. Hayden-Jenkins expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the program’s success, noting the powerful impact of each participant.

“I am truly pleased with every participant who helped make this day impactful and uplifting,” he said. “A special thank you to our Youth Department for their powerful skit, ‘What If There Were No Black People.’ We also celebrate Poet Laureate Joyce Dale, and we thank all members who shared poems from aspiring African American poets.”

Rev. Dr. Hayden-Jenkins also highlighted the musical tribute portion of the program as a meaningful moment of reflection and honor.

Michelle Allison, longtime local civic leader — from county government to the NAACP and Rotary — was a guest of honor at the celebration.

“The tribute recognizing great African American singers was a beautiful moment of honor and remembrance,” he said.

The church extended appreciation to several distinguished guests who were recognized for their professional contributions and service to the African American community.

“We extend sincere appreciation to our distinguished guests: Dr. Bonita Jones, MD (OBGYN), Kaiser Permanente Modesto, for her contributions to our African American community; Dr. Charolet Vang, DPM (Podiatry), for her service and contributions; and Dr. John DeGraft-Johnson, MD, FACS (Thoracic Surgery Specialist) for an exceptional keynote presentation,” Rev. Dr. Hayden-Jenkins said.

He also acknowledged continued community support from local leadership.

“We also thank Antoine Hubbard Sr., CEO of S.O.U.L., for his continued support and for recognizing the strength and value of our community,” he added.

Rev. Dr. Hayden-Jenkins closed with a scripture that reflected the spirit of service emphasized throughout the celebration:
“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” (Matthew 9:37).
