Merced College suffers ‘general network outage’

Merced College officials were scrambling last weekend to deal with a widespread network outage that affected the entire main campus, according to a report to the campus community.

“On Nov. 3, we observed unusual activity on the network,” wrote Chris Vitelli, the president of Merced College, in an online posting. “We immediately took steps to shut down our network and began an investigation. Since then, we have been actively working with our third-party incident response partners to determine the nature and scope of the activity and bring our systems back online.”

“At this time, we cannot confirm when the network will be restored/fully operational, but we will continue to provide ongoing updates as information becomes available… Please know the safety and security of our data and the secure restoration of our systems are our top priorities. We are working diligently to minimize any business interruptions. We thank you for your patience while we work to address this matter.

“As of tomorrow morning, (Monday, Nov. 7) most operations and services, including all classes, will resume. Access to the internet, network files, emails, and other technology will remain very limited until further notice. We are doing everything we can to get all services back up and running, but it is imperative we do not rush the process. In the meantime, we have set-up a temporary website for updates and basic information for students and employees at www.mercedcollege.org.”
