Following a flurry of overnight preparations by road crews, City of Merced leaders and officials reopened Main Street early Monday morning with a new, permanent one-way directional change.
Now drivers traveling on Main Street will do so on a one-way street that stretches toward the west, from Martin Luther King Jr. Way to O Street.
To celebrate the change, residents who made their way downtown for the 7 a.m. celebration on Monday were able to watch as a convoy of classic cars were escorted by vehicles from the Merced Fire and Police Departments. Leading the way was a restored Crown Victoria patrol car from the MPD.
As of Monday morning, crews were still completing the work on crosswalk areas at the intersection of Main Street and Canal Street; however, the roadway remained open to vehicles.
