The blistering rock musical “Lizzie” — presented by the local Phoenix Creative Collective — will be at The MAC on Main Street next weekend, Feb. 27-29. All shows start at 7 p.m.
Based on the life of Lizzie Borden and the sensational murders that propelled her into the national spotlight, “Lizzie” delves into the grisly story of bloody murder, rage, sex, and betrayal that became one of the first national American scandals.
Told through the eyes of four women fronting a rock band, “Lizzie” explores what each of them know with intelligence, humor, and a massive dose of raw power. With a sound that’s reminiscent of Bikini Kill, the Runaways, and Heart, this musical is an experience that will leave you breathless.
The story of Lizzie Borden has become American mythology wrapped around a mystery more than a century old. In 1892, Lizzie’s parents were brutally murdered with an axe and the blame was placed on their daughter.
The nature of the story, the subsequent trial, and the personalities of the people involved make it a perfect subject for a bold and surprising rock musical, and “Lizzie” has been amazing audiences since it first opened almost a decade ago.
The cast consists of four exceptional vocalists who play Lizzie, her sister Emma, the maid Bridget, and their neighbor Alice while being backed by a live rock band. Through their tales, a surprising story emerges about what really happened the night Lizzie’s parents died.
All performances will be at The Merced Multicultural Arts Center at 645 W. Main Street in Merced. Tickets and information are available at phoenixtherise.com or by calling (209) 643-5880.
