Larry Morse II, former D.A., dies at age 64
Very sad news came to the Times just before the presses ran on Wednesday morning.
Reports came in that former Merced County District Attorney Larry Morse II died in Sacramento.
The 64-year-old longtime prosecutor reported died suddenly of a heart attack this past morning.
Morse was elected Merced County District Attorney in 2006, and led the office through the start of 2019. He personally prosecuted many high-profile cases with a perfect success record, including the death penalty conviction of the man who murdered Merced Police Officer Stephan Gray. He also spearheaded several investigations against area gangs, and created partnerships with local schools to proactively keep local young people on the right track.
Morse is a longtime member and leader in the California District Attorneys Association, and was working with the group at the time of his death.
Despite his work in Sacramento, Morse had continued to live in Merced with his family in the downtown area.
The Times joins the Merced community in mourning the loss of Larry Morse, and we hope to update this story as more information becomes available.
