Downtown Merced burst into a kaleidoscope of color and joyous sounds this past Saturday, May 17, as the Vatthanatham Lao Foundation and the local Lao community celebrated Pi Mai Lao — the traditional Lao New Year.

Hundreds gathered downtown, transforming the area into a lively showcase of Lao culture, complete with enticing aromas of traditional cuisine and the captivating rhythms of native music.

The day began with a spiritual foundation, as community members participated in the solemn tradition of alms giving, followed by a Baci blessing ceremony. These rituals fostered a sense of unity and set intentions for a year filled with prosperity and well-being.

As the day unfolded, the energy amplified with captivating cultural performances. Dancers, adorned in exquisite silk attire, gracefully shared tales of Lao heritage through their movements, while the enchanting melodies of traditional instruments filled the air, inviting attendees of all ages to join in lively folk dances.

A few days before the celebration, the Nang Sangkhane was chosen through a “divine lottery.” Young women hoping for the honor lined up, ordered from oldest to youngest, to carefully select eggs from a ceremonial “khan.” The egg holding the image of “Nang Sangkhane” determines the winner.

This year, the lucky recipient was Allysa Phommavanh Simmons. In a surprising turn of events, Allysa, the youngest participant and the last to choose an egg, discovered the winning image. She had the distinct honor of portraying Nang Thoungsa Thevi, the Sunday goddess who rides the majestic Garuda in the parade.

Throughout the vibrant celebration, attendees indulged in the rich flavors of authentic Lao cuisine. From the staple sticky rice and savory laap to the refreshing tang of papaya salad and delectable sweets, the food vendors offered a true taste of Laos. A bustling marketplace also provided opportunities to admire and purchase traditional Lao handicrafts, intricate silk textiles, and beautiful jewelry.

Water also plays a vital role in the Lao New Year celebration, symbolizing the cleansing away of negative energy and the welcoming of a fresh start. This year’s festivities offered a unique opportunity for a thorough dousing! Many lined up to receive a generous water blessing from a City of Merced Fire Truck, ensuring they would be cleansed and refreshed, carrying good fortune until the next Lao New Year.

The 2025 Lao New Year celebration in Downtown Merced was a resounding success, a testament to the vibrant spirit and strong unity of the local Lao community. It beautifully showcased the rich cultural heritage that enriches Merced, contributing to the city’s diverse and welcoming character. As the festivities drew to a close, the echoes of music, laughter, and joyful camaraderie lingered, promising a year filled with happiness and prosperity for all.
