Ice cream at Atwater public library helps promote Summer Reading Program

Friends of the Library at the Atwater branch of the Merced County Public Library, located at 1600 Third Street in Atwater, drew attention to the branch’s Summer Reading Program on June 14 by dishing up a refreshing goody – – vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and whipped cream on top.

Between 11:30 and 12:30, Friends Shirley Woodall and Saundra Buehner handed cups filled with the delicious treats to children wearing crowns, compliments of Burger King, and the kids were allowed to choose a free book.

Library Assistant Esther Garcia explained, “The Atwater Friends wanted to help us promote the Summer Reading Program. It’s to bring in more people. If you sign up, you’re welcome to some ice cream. All ages are eligible.”

She exclaimed, “We’ve had 140 sign up for the program in six days, since June 8!”

Describing the Summer Reading Program, Garcia said, “It runs from June 8 through August 3. Children ages 5 and under have to read 20 books to get a free book, and children ages 6 and up have to read 5 books to earn a free book.

“They also earn points for the drawings. There are weekly drawings for Barnes & Nobles gift cards, and there are three grand prize drawings. The kids have to keep reading, complete activities or attend events to earn points. For example, any extra book they read is worth 100 points, and they get one ticket for the drawing. The grand prize for ages birth to 5 is a play set; for ages 6 to 12, it’s an e-book reader; and for teens to adult, it’s a Jansport backpack filled with school supplies.”

Examples of activities worth 25 points each were attending any library program, checking out a DVD based on a book, listening to an audio book, asking a librarian for a reading recommendation, reading a book of poetry, and writing a poem or a song about a book.

The events to be held at the Atwater branch during the Summer Reading Program are: Zumba on June 20 at 1 p.m.; magician Tim Mannix on June 29 at 11 a.m.; ventriloquist Tony Borders on July 13 at10:30 a.m.; magician Phil Ackerly on July 18 at 3 p.m.; Zumba on July 23 at 1 p.m.; and Zumba on July 27 at 10:30 a.m.

Story Time takes place on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m.
