Huge support for Alpha Pregnancy Help Center

A large audience of community sponsors, longtime supporters, business owners and members of the faith-based community showed up at Yosemite Church on Sept. 21 for the annual fundraising gala to benefit the Alpha Pregnancy Help Center in Merced.

With the colorful theme “Fiesta,” the event highlighted the work being done at the center, and featured testimony by staff and associates, along with a performance by comedian Nazareth.

Alpha PHC began in March 1985 as a pregnancy resource center for women with an unplanned pregnancy, in response to the 1973 law that made abortion legal in the United States. Today, the center is a state-licensed medical clinic, providing limited OB ultrasounds at no cost, along with a mobile clinic that serves hundreds of women annually.

“We are seeing more abortion-minded women, and more women overall,” said Debbie Croft, executive director of the APHC. “Client visits have increased by about 60 percent compared to last year.”

Though statistics are approximate, Croft believes “80 to 90 percent of abortion-minded women who come to a pregnancy center do change their mind after meeting their tiny, pre-born baby via ultrasound.”

She added: “Sometimes clients will tell us, ‘I took the abortion pill once, but I will never do that again. Afterwards I spiraled into depression, started drinking and doing drugs, and contemplating suicide.’ … And to clarify, as much as we love seeing a women change her mind, we exist to show compassion — to listen to and support every women who comes, no matter what her decision is. … At Alpha PHC, after 38 years of providing free pregnancy related services, we are not retreating in this work of promoting life. We cannot retreat. We cannot go backwards.”

The center continues to accept donations, community volunteers, drivers, RNs, diapers, wipes and baby clothing.
