High school artists honored for their creative works

Many of the best student artists in Merced County gathered at the Multicultural Arts Center (MAC) last Saturday as part of the annual High School Honors Art Show.

The show, currently on display throughout the MAC galleries, is organized by the Merced County Arts Council, the Merced County Office of Education and UC Merced. It features every medium from photography and graphic design to painting and sculptures.

As part of the reception on Saturday, friends and family filled out the Black Box Theatre for a special awards and recognition ceremony.

Colton Dennis, the MAC’s executive director, said he was thankful for the contributions that both parents and teachers have made to the young artists creative growth, as the arts serves a vital purpose within the local Merced community.

This years best overall winner went to Golden Valley High School’s Elijah Martinez for their piece “Mass Shooting American Flag.” Accepting the award in Martinez’s place was art instructor Mr. Her.

The show will run until April 16. The MAC is located at 645 West Main Street in downtown Merced. It is open Wednesday through Friday, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., with office hours from Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Contact the MAC by phone at (209) 388-1090, or by email at [email protected].
