‘Dia De Los Muertos’ Comes Alive At The MAC

The Multicultural Arts Center (MAC) in Merced is showing some seasonal spirit as the center celebrates our community’s Hispanic heritage and art with its current Dia De Los Muertos gallery titled “To Love and Be Loved in Return,” which will be open to the public throughout October until Nov. 13.

The MAC will also be holding a reception event on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is a fun and beautiful way for the whole family to support as well as engage with the arts in our community.

Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday tradition that is celebrated in Mexico and other parts of the world on the 1st and 2nd day of November, with many customs, celebrations, and ceremonies that take place in late October. It is a holiday where families and the community come together to celebrate as well as honor loved ones who have passed. This is a lively and vibrant event, which can be seen clearly through its associated art and décor.

On display is a huge array of Dia De Los Muertos themed art from local artists as well as students. There is also information about the traditions and meanings behind this cultural celebration, as well as a community altar that honors many missed and beloved members of our community—which includes the Singh Family as an act of solidarity on behalf of the MAC.

There are over a dozen thoughtfully decorated alters full of vibrant art as well as over 60 pieces of artwork on display, including works by Ruben Sanchez.

“We really focused on bringing more members of the community into this year’s display,” said Colton Dennis, the MAC director.

The gallery hours are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday – Friday; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
