Butch Hughes Foundation supporting youth sports for all

A foundation to support youth sports in our communities has recently been established and needs local support.

The Butch Hughes Youth Baseball and Softball Foundation was established by the local American Legion Post 83 as a means to reduce or eliminate the cost to parents for their child to participate in the summer American Legion baseball program.

A budget of $20,000 has been set to meet the needs of funding American Legion baseball in 2021. All funds raised over that amount will be distributed to Little League and girls softball programs.

A unique coin has been minted and offered to donors for a $100 donation. Checks can be sent to 939 W. Main St., Merced, CA 95340, or sent to the GoFundMe account found on Facebook under American Legion Baseball, Merced 83 (http://www.GoFundMe.com/ALB83Merced).

Individuals, corporations, businesses and organizations are invited to help.  All major donors will be recognized in promotional materials at games, in programs, banners on the field, or on uniforms, depending on the amount of donation and donor’s preference.

Butch Hughes was a longtime baseball supporter in Merced, having been a player as a youth, a professional pitcher, the head coach at Merced College, and pitching coach at Stone Ridge and Merced High, and for the Colorado Rockies, as well as giving private lessons.

The Foundation hopes to honor his legacy by ensuring all who want to play baseball, can.
