“We’re making a holistic investment in technology to allow people to access their money however they wish to,” explains David Ness, President and CEO at MERCO Credit Union, when asked about the roll-out of their new mobile banking app.
Called “MERCO Credit Union Mobile Banking,” the app for smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices serves as an extension of the online banking system MERCO has been offering to its members for the past 12 years. It’s available from all app stores.
The MERCO app allows members to conduct online banking transactions no matter where they happen to be – plus some very cool added features.
Members will use a fingerprint login. “It’s very easy. You don’t have to remember passwords,” said Patrick Myhre, MERCO Marketing Director.
The app, launched in January, allows any account transactions that could be made online including instant cash transfers, person-to-person payments using Zell, checking your credit score, free credit monitoring and zero liability fraud protection. It will send alerts if someone tries to open loans or other financial accounts using your identification. It will even identify ways to save money on account fees or loan rates. Mobile deposit features were added in February.
“Our app makes banking very convenient for people who live a distance from our physical locations,” said Ness. “Technology has leveled the field between local credit unions and megabanks regarding access to banking. The need for physical locations has been dramatically reduced.”
The app is the last of three major changes – each designed to make MERCO a stronger financial partner for its members. In 2017 they expanded their field of membership. In 2018 they expanded their ATM network. And in 2019 they launched a sophisticated mobile banking APP.
This year marks 65 years in business for MERCO. Myhre is planning a “Member Appreciation Event” in September. Members will be receiving mugs, travel coffee cups, and other give-away products through the year.
“We celebrate at every five year mark,” Ness said, noting he has been with MERCO for more than 20 years so far. “By embracing technology we plan to get through another 65 years.”
MERCO has come a long way since they opened in 1954 when only Merced County employees could join. “Our initial mission was to provide financial support to those who were not getting a square deal from big banks,” Ness said. “My personal mission is to preserve a local institution in our community. One hundred percent of our employees lives, works, worships and goes to school here. We care about the community. We are the community.”
MERCO supports CASA, the Playhouse, Kiwanis and Kiddieland, and the Downtown Christmas Tree each year. In the past they sponsored the annual Bike Race. And MERCO employees volunteer throughout the communities they serve in many different roles.
Today MERCO serves people with any affiliation in Merced, Mariposa, Madera and Stanislaus County; including residents, workers, worshipers, organization members and students. Even those who move out of the area may continue banking with MERCO if they choose to.
There are three physical branch locations with a total of 38 employees. Members have access to a network of 80,000 ATMs spread across the nation and into several other countries. And now mobile access to MERCO accounts.
“We will continue to provide our members with big bank services with a hometown attitude. We have the staff to care for our members. We pride ourselves on providing that place where you walk in and we know you,” Ness smiled with pride.
