Merced poised for 30th MLK Day Celebration, march

The Unity March will kick of at 11 a.m. from the Amtrak Station in downtown Merced.

Merced will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20, with a Unity March and Community Program.

This year’s event will mark the celebration’s 30th year — thanks to the advocacy of the local MLK Jr. Day Committee members.
The primary presentations of this year’s Unity March and Celebration will be delivered by Pastor Allen Huddleston and Pastor Nailah Hubbard. Additionally, NAACP President Allen Brooks will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The Unity March will start at the Merced Amtrak Station, at the north end of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where participants and attendees will begin gathering at 10 a.m.

The procession will start at 11 a.m., and follow along MLK Jr. Way all the way to the Merced Theatre, at the corner of MLK and Main Street. Following the parade, there will be a free program held inside the theatre for everyone in the community to attend.

“The Merced Martin Luther King Committee proudly invite you to join us for the annual unity march and celebration in honor of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.,” says Tamara Cobb, of the committee’s key contributors. “This significant event marks 30 years of commemorating the enduring legacy of Dr. King, who inspired a nation with his vision of equality, justice, and nonviolent resistance. Every year we come together to honor Dr King’s dream of a society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, color, or creed.  The Unity March symbolizes a commitment to these principles and serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for civil rights and social justice is ongoing. By marching through the streets of Merced, we affirm our dedication to fostering a community built on unity and inclusiveness.

“The purpose of the celebration is a testament to our collective efforts to build a better, more equitable future. We strive to highlight the importance of Dr. King’s work and legacy. This year’s celebration promises to be vibrant and impactful. Expect to see State Senator Anna Caballero,  State Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, Merced Mayor Matt Serratto, UC Merced Chancellor Juan Sanchez Munoz, Merced’s Chief of Police Steven Stanfield, as well as community activists, students, and other residents … From heartfelt speeches and engaging activities to meaningful discussions and collaborative projects, the celebration offers something for everyone.”
