The Times has been following the local Maasai Medical Mission, a non-profit organization led by Merced’s Robert Quall, as the group makes its way through impoverished regions Kenya to provide healthcare services and other support.
They are about half way through their mission. Quall sent in this report and images through text messaging — of all things.
“The Merced Kenya medical team just completed its first week of clinics. The 30-person team treated 2,800 men and women in Meru province at the base of Mt. Kenya…
“1,500 pairs of eye glasses have been distributed…
“Next week finds the group in Kisumu and Kisii…
“Team Merced played the Meru club soccer team before 300 fans. The local team showed unbelievable sportsmanship and lost 3-2, piling at about 20 percent capacity…
“We met Bruce today at a market. The 76-year-old Canadian and his wife are the only “mizungus” we have seen in 10 days. He an his wife have been serving hot meals to 350 children a day because a local grocery chain support’s the effort…
“Covid restrictions in this area are basically non-existent…
“Next week we are in “malaria ” land so will buy more malaria medicine — about $1,000 dollars more.
“Weather here is not even close to the hundreds!”
In all, this mission of local volunteers, doctors and nurses plan to conduct 64 medical clinics in a three-week period. They are bringing 3,000 pair of glasses, 200 handcrafted children’s dresses, and 125 soccer balls.
Way to go Team Merced!
