Family, friends celebrate Life & Times of John Derby

Family members, friends and loved ones of Times Publisher John Derby gathered last Sunday at the Italo-American Lodge in Merced to remember his life.

Guests joined members of the Derby family, including John’s son, David Derby, and his wife Veronica, and their two daughters, Rosemary and Carolyn; as well John’s daughter, Laura, and her husband, Bart, and their son, Sean. There were also several nieces and nephews at the event.

Family of John Derby’s late wife, Kathy, were also present, including Kelby and Natalie Hooper.

One highlight of the event included a performance of the song, “Windmills of Your Mind,” by John Derby’s granddaugther, Carolyn Derby. John Derby was said to have been wanting to learn the song on his guitar before he died in January of this year.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful Italian-style meat prepared by the Lodge chefs and servers, as well as an open bar. Several members of the community gave touching, emotional and humorous stories of their experiences with John Derby.

The Times staff would also like to thank everyone who came out to the event, and those in the community who continue to support the newspapers that John Derby started.
