Deadline approaches for Jr. Leadership Merced Class 15

Members of Class 14 of the GMCC Junior Leadership Merced program enjoyed their retreat at Strawberry Ridge. They completed teambuilding and communications exercises that are part of the ‘thrive and survive’ training.

The Junior Leadership Merced (JLM) program is an opportunity for high school students to learn and practice the leadership skills colleges find compelling on enrollment applications.

“Listing the Junior Leadership Merced program on a college application speaks volumes toward acceptance to any institution,” explained GMCC President and CEO Manuel Alvarado. “Over 80 percent of our participants go on to college and mention that their acceptance was partially due to having this program on their resumes.”

JLM was developed by the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) in 2003 to identify and develop effective community leaders for the future of Merced County.

“We are recruiting high school students who want to develop skill sets on leadership, decision making, critical thinking and active listening,” Alvarado said. “Those chosen for the Class 15 program will take active tours with community leaders and meet with city officials about government, infrastructure and law enforcement.”

Early in the program, Class 15 participants will enjoy a two and a half day retreat at Camp Green Meadows in Fish Camp.

Participants – from sophomores to seniors – will meet and network with current community leaders at their work sites during the next six months. The deadline for applications (available online) is Friday, May 31. There is no cost to students or their families as local businesses have covered the expenses through sponsorships.

Sponsors for Class 15 of JLM include: Merced County Office of Education (MCOE), MCOE Foundation and Hoffman Security.

“I’d like to personally thank Steve Tietjen for supporting the Junior Leadership program’s retreat this year,” said Alvarado. Steve M. Tietjen, Ed.D is the Superintendent of Schools for MCOE.
