New Anglican parish opens its doors in Merced

A new parish has opened its doors in Merced with the founding of Christ Our Redeemer Anglican Church, a traditional and sacramental parish committed to serving families and individuals seeking authentic Christian worship. 

The newly formed congregation represents a return to the historic roots of Anglican tradition, emphasizing liturgical worship, the centrality of Holy Communion, and the rich theological heritage that has guided Anglican communities for centuries.

The new parish was recently incorporated from two former Anglican churches — St. Luke’s in Merced and St. Nicholas in Atwater. It is a member of the Anglican Church in North America, the largest Anglican province in the United States.

Anglicanism traces its historic roots to the 3rd Century AD when the first Christian churches were instituted in England. 

“We are thrilled to bring traditional Anglican worship to this community,” said the Rev. Gerry Grossman, rector of the new church. 

Christ Our Redeemer Anglican Church offers an opportunity to experience worship that connects them to the broader Anglican Communion while maintaining deep reverence for scripture and sacrament.

“Our mission is to provide a welcoming environment where people can encounter God through beautiful liturgy, meaningful sacraments, and faithful biblical teaching,” he said.

The church’s traditional approach includes the use of classical Anglican liturgy, regular celebration of Holy Communion, and observance of the church calendar with its seasons of preparation, celebration, and reflection. 

The sacramental focus means that baptism, confirmation, marriage, and other sacred rites hold central importance in the life of the parish.

“Christ Our Redeemer Anglican Church welcomes newcomers to Anglican tradition as well as those familiar with liturgical worship,” Grossman said.

Services will follow traditional Anglican patterns, with special observances for major Christian festivals throughout the year. The church also incorporates traditional Anglican music and hymnody into its worship life.

The establishment of this new parish “reflects the continuing vitality of Anglican tradition and its appeal to those seeking worship that combines reverence, beauty, and theological depth,” Grossman said.

Community members interested in learning more about Christ Our Redeemer Anglican Church are invited to attend Sunday services at 9 a.m. The church is located at St. Joseph’s Chapel, 2740 M Street in Merced.

“Christ Our Redeemer Anglican Church looks forward to becoming an integral part of the community’s spiritual landscape,” Grossman said.
